# How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take? A Week-by-Week Timeline

A full kitchen remodel takes **6–10 weeks of construction** for most Northern Virginia homes — plus 4–8 weeks before that for design, permits and material ordering. Projects that "take six months" usually didn't go wrong during construction; they went wrong because demolition started before the plan and materials were ready.

Here's the realistic week-by-week, and what makes the difference between a smooth project and a stalled one.

## Before construction: the part that decides everything

- **Design & 3D renders (2–4 weeks).** Layout, cabinetry, materials and appliances get decided — and you see the finished kitchen in photoreal 3D before anything is ordered.
- **Proposal & permits (1–3 weeks).** Fixed scope and price, then county permits for any electrical, plumbing or structural work.
- **Material ordering (runs in parallel).** Cabinets are the long pole: semi-custom typically takes 4–8 weeks to arrive. Demolition is scheduled so materials land when they're needed, not after.

## The construction timeline, week by week

1. **Week 1 — Demolition and prep.** Cabinets, counters and flooring come out; dust barriers protect the rest of the house. Any surprises behind the walls surface now, while there's time to solve them.
2. **Week 2 — Rough-ins.** Plumbing, electrical and HVAC move to their new positions. If a wall is opening, the beam goes in now. County rough inspections happen at this stage.
3. **Week 3 — Drywall and paint prep.** Insulation, drywall, finishing and priming. The room looks like a room again.
4. **Weeks 4–5 — Cabinets and counters.** Cabinet installation takes several days of precise work. Countertops are templated only after cabinets are set, then fabricated — usually a 5–10 day turnaround — while tile and painting continue.
5. **Week 6 — Backsplash, flooring, trim.** Tile goes up, floors are finished or patched, trim and paint are completed.
6. **Weeks 7–8 — Appliances, plumbing fixtures, punch list.** Appliances slide in, the sink and faucet are connected, lighting is finished, and the final county inspection signs the project off. A detailed walkthrough catches every last item.

## What actually causes delays

- **Late decisions.** Changing the cabinet color after ordering restarts the clock. Decisions made in design cost nothing; decisions made during construction cost weeks.
- **Special-order materials.** That perfect imported tile may have a 10-week lead time — fine, if it's ordered before demolition.
- **Hidden conditions.** Older homes hide surprises; a 10–20% contingency and an experienced crew keep them from becoming stoppages. - **Too many hands.** When design, cabinets and construction come from three different companies, handoffs eat the calendar. One team, one schedule.

## Can you live at home during a kitchen remodel?

Almost everyone does. Set up a temporary kitchen — microwave, coffee maker, a utility sink if possible — and agree on working hours and clean-up standards before day one.
